Forth of a six session programme for KS1 Maths teachers
Invitations have been sent to identified schools to join in a project aimed at improving progress in mathematics. Strategic data analysis carried out by the local authority has identified that for the past three years key stage 1 to key stage 2 value added for Bath and North East Somerset has been low, especially in mathematics. This is also shown in individual school data for 2015 where only 4 schools had progress which was significantly above the national value, whilst 15 schools had progress significantly below national. This issue has been raised as a concern in reports to councillors and they have agreed to make this a priority. For this reason we have set up a mathematics project aimed at improving learning, teaching and progress in mathematics.
We have used mathematics data for the past three years and Ofsted key issues to identify schools that might benefit from joining this project and have commissioned Sarah Savage, who will shortly be joining the team at the Teaching School, to lead it. She will be seeking to identify issues and work with you and your mathematics leads to support improvement over the next year. We are intending that this project would be an opportunity for schools to work together over a period of time to build sustained improvement in mathematics. Tom Morrison, who has taken over from Lin Bartlett as Senior School Improvement Adviser and has a background in mathematics teaching, will be working with Sarah and you to monitor the project. The attached questionnaire is designed to help us identify the key issues for schools in designing the project.
